Innovation in Action: Road Railer – Addressing the Paper Market

Innovation has always been woven into the fabric of Victa Railfreight’s identity. From its earliest days, we have embraced new ideas and technologies to deliver smarter, more efficient rail solutions. One of the most compelling examples of this spirit in action was in North Kent, where a bold concept met real-world logistics—and succeeded.

In the late 1990s, EWS (English, Welsh & Scottish Railway) trialled the American RoadRailer system in the UK. This hybrid road-rail technology was designed to move cargo sensitive to handling — particularly paper products — more efficiently by allowing trailers to travel both on roads and rail tracks without the need for transhipment. It was a novel idea for the UK market and allowed EWS to expand its offering to key forest products customers. Given the presence of both paper mills and import facilities, North Kent was chosen as the one of the testbed areas.

Victa played a pivotal role in supporting the trials. The company coordinated the movement of trailers arriving from the North of the UK, for road delivery to end customers in the South East, and then found “backloads” – a common concept in road haulage but rarely achieved on rail - from customers in the hinterland to Hoo Junction.  At Hoo, RoadRailer units were marshalled for onward transit North on existing rail freight services. This required precision planning, close collaboration with stakeholders, and a deep understanding of both road and rail logistics.

Victa’s involvement in the RoadRailer trial exemplified its commitment to customer-focused solutions and its readiness to embrace new technologies that improve efficiency and reliability.

From concept to reality, Victa proved that innovation isn’t just about ideas—it’s about making them work.
