Charity Cargo, Redundant Munitions & Roll Cages: Unusual Loads, Smart Moves

Next in our #VictaAt30 Series

Not all freight is conventional—and Victa has handled its fair share of unusual cargo

From charity aid shipments bound for the Middle East to roll cages from Northern warehouses and redundant munitions, Victa’s team found smart, efficient ways to load and transfer goods.

Wagons which had bought in steel from Italy were occasionally loaded with Charity Aid cargo for the Middle East which presented some loading challenges!

In one case, 48 roll cages were transferred from rail to lorry by just two people in ten minutes—no mechanical handling required!

The transfer from a rail wagon into a lorry of 48 roll cages from a Northern warehouse could be undertaken by 2 men in 10 minutes, with no mechanical handling equipment required – simples!

Sensitive Freight - Seamless Ops

The periodic shipments of redundant munitions stand out—not just for their complexity, but for the trust placed in Victa to manage them with precision and care.

A Delicate Operation

Transporting redundant munitions is no ordinary task. These shipments, destined for disposal in Germany, required meticulous planning, robust safety protocols, and seamless coordination across multiple agencies. The journey began at Hoo Junction, where Victa’s experienced team took charge of the rail operations, ensuring every detail was accounted for—from secure loading procedures to route planning and timing.

The final leg of the journey involved transfer to road vehicles at Cliffe jetty, just a few miles from Hoo. Victa’s role didn’t end with the rail leg; we oversaw the entire logistics chain, ensuring the cargo was handled with the utmost discretion and security.

Planning for Precision

Handling munitions meant working under heightened scrutiny. Victa’s operational team developed bespoke plans for each shipment, factoring in:

  • Specialist equipment for safe loading and unloading

  • Dedicated staff training to manage sensitive cargo

  • Contingency planning for every stage of the journey

  • Coordination with disposal authorities in Germany

This wasn’t just about moving goods—it was about managing risk, ensuring compliance, and delivering peace of mind.
