Victa Westlink Rail: A Bold Step Forward—and the Foundations It Built

After the success of CTRL, Victa was ready for a new challenge—and that opportunity arrived through a partnership with FM Rail, a small but ambitious train operator. Together, they launched Victa Westlink Rail, marking Victa’s first venture into mainline operations.
The collaboration unlocked a new level of capability. Victa branded its own locomotives for the first time, operated services from Hams Hall (near Tamworth) to Scotland. Operationally, the venture proved that Victa could compete in a new sector—and succeed.

But while the operational performance was strong, FM Rail faced significant commercial pressures. When the company entered administration, Victa Railfreight formed a partnership with asset specialist Westlink Group to form Victa Westlink Rail and took over its operating licence, elevating Victa to mainline operator status in its own right. Despite launching a new service between London and the Scottish Central Belt, just seven months later the Stobart Group acquired Westlink, which was already aligned with another operator, and the new rail venture was wound down.
This turning point led not to retreat, but to renewal.
Returning to its roots, Victa refocused on what it had always done exceptionally well: providing skilled, reliable operational staff to the rail freight sector. From driver operators to ground staff, Victa became the trusted partner Freight Operating Companies relied on to manage fluctuating workloads and keep services running smoothly.

Over the past 18 years, every major Freight Operating Company has worked with Victa—testament to the company’s safety ethos, resilience, reputation, and the strength of the foundations built during and after the Westlink chapter.
Sometimes, stepping into a new sector teaches you more than you expect. And sometimes, going “back to basics” is exactly what propels you forward.
