Privatisation & Possibility: The Early Consultancy Years

As we continue celebrating Victa Railfreight’s 30th anniversary, we’re looking back at the moments that shaped who we are—and still guide how we work today.

As British Rail’s freight operations prepared for privatisation in the mid-1990s, the rail industry was entering a period of rapid change and opportunity. Many businesses were eager to explore the “art of the possible,” seeking new ways to move goods efficiently and safely. Neil Sime, having recently left British Rail, found himself at the heart of this transformation.

Drawing on his deep operational knowledge and industry relationships, Neil began offering consultancy services to companies navigating the new rail freight landscape. His work focused on logistics, rail access, and tailored operational solutions—always with an emphasis on safety, quality, and personal service. One of the earliest opportunities came from Transrail, a regional freight company that needed help moving steel coils from South Wales to Chatham. Neil’s solution was practical, responsive, and bespoke—hallmarks of the approach that would define Victa Railfreight.

That ethos—finding smart, safe, and tailored solutions for a wide range of customers—remains at the heart of Victa Railfreight today. Whether supporting major industrial movements or providing specialist ground staff and training, the company continues to deliver high-quality service with a personal touch, just as it did in its earliest days.
