Case Studies

Below are some case studies for a selection of projects that we have been involved with.

Case Study 1 - CTRL & Beechbrook Farm

Victa Railfreight Ltd managed all the rail logistics servicing the track laying and power supply installation contracts during the Construction of phase 1 of the Channel Tunnel Rail link. As well as controlling train movements on the 70 mile linear construction site, the company also designed, managed and operated the materials Railhead at Beechbrook Farm near Ashford in Kent which serviced the contract.

The facility handled 72 train movements per day during the peak phases of the project and Victa Railfreight provided a full rail management and operations package to the client employing 75 staff in a contract worth £5.7m.

Case Study 2 - Chatham Docks

Victa Railfreight was responsible for the re-introduction of rail services to Chatham Docks in 2001. After dealing with the licensing and regulatory issues associated with reactivating a railway which had been dormant for eight years, Victa Railfreight has been responsible for safe operation of the 1.5 mile branch line and dock rail complex ever since.

Since re-opening, the railway has conveyed in excess of 80,000 tonnes of steel products and enabled Chatham Docks to become the supply hub for the supply of reinforcing material to the Heathrow Terminal 5 construction contract which involved daily trains providing "just in time deliveries" of steel picked from stock, loaded and delivered within 10 hours of receiving the order.

Case Study 3 - Whitemoor Yard

In 2002 Victa Railfreight was retained by Network Rail to carry out detailed design and operational feasibility work for the new engineering material distribution centre at March in Cambridgeshire on the site of an old marshalling yard. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the final design was successfully delivered to an extremely challenging timescale.

With planning approval granted, Victa Railfreight then took on the role of logistics manager for the construction of the new yard. This involved managing incoming material movements to the site as well as the rail borne removal of spoil to Connington Tip near Peterborough where a satellite operation was temporarily established.

With construction complete, Victa Railfreight then worked closely for the first 6 months of operation with GB Railfreight, who had been awarded the contract to run the yard, to support, train and mentor their newly recruited staff.
